The Problem
According to the World Bank, the legacy of colonialism and apartheid in South Africa continues to reinforce inequality and a divided society, made worse by gangsterism, drug abuse, addiction and gender-based violence. Every farmer knows the harvest is decided in the seedbed. A child's home is that seedbed. It is where culture and mindset are first bred, and what the school and the employer later see is simply the crop. Culture shapes beliefs, beliefs settle into a mindset, and the mindset shows up as habits and behaviour. If we only trim the behaviour, we never ask what soil is growing it.

The Loudest and Quietest Children in Your Class May Be Carrying the Same Weight
One child cannot stop talking. Another has not spoken in weeks. We see a discipline problem and a model pupil. It is worth asking whether we are looking at a fire alarm and a smoke detector with a flat battery. Both can signal the same unmet need. Keep the boundary, and still ask what lies beneath.
